Wang Dongjie and Wang Dongmei: Twin Sisters Return to China in Search of Their Roots |

From the very beginning of their lives, they have always had each other.

Twin sisters Wang Dongjie and Wang Dongmei are believed to have been born around 2 January 2000. The following day, on 3 January, they were found outside the Civil Affairs Bureau in Feidong County, Hefei, Anhui Province.

They were later adopted by American parents, crossing the ocean to the United States, where they grew up.

More than twenty years have passed. The sisters have always had each other by their side, yet much about the beginning of their shared story remains unknown.

Who are their birth parents? Why were the sisters left outside the Feidong County Civil Affairs Bureau? Does anyone still remember what happened that winter in January 2000?

This May, Dongjie and Dongmei returned to China.

They were joined by several other adoptees who had also been adopted to the United States and who, like them, hoped to learn more about where their lives began. Together, they embarked on a journey to search for their roots, travelling from the places where they grew up towards the places where their stories first began.

For many international adoptees, returning to China is more than a journey across geographical distance. The place names, dates and few lines recorded in their files can take on a different meaning when they are finally able to stand in those places themselves.

For Dongjie and Dongmei, this is a search they are making together.

They have been fortunate never to lose each other. Now, side by side, they are searching for the part of their shared story that remains unknown.

If you are from Feidong, Hefei, Anhui Province, know anything about the area around January 2000, or have any information that might be connected to the twins’ origins, please help by sharing their story.

More than twenty years have passed, but perhaps someone still remembers two newborn twin girls from that winter.

May this journey back to China, spanning more than two decades and thousands of miles, bring the sisters one step closer to the answers they seek. And may each of those travelling alongside them have the chance to find their way back to where their own story began.
