Lìxià | The Beginning of Summer

A Time of Ripening Light and Growing Energy

In the traditional Chinese solar calendar, Lìxià (立夏) — literally “Start of Summer” — marks the seventh solar term and the official arrival of the summer season. It usually falls on May 5th or 6th, when the sun reaches the celestial longitude of 45°.

Lìxià signals the moment when yang energy reaches a new height. The days grow longer, the air turns warmer, and life begins to stretch toward its fullest potential. Grains are sprouting, silkworms are feeding, and people start to prepare for the heat and intensity of the season ahead.

🌿 Traditions and Symbols

In ancient China, Lìxià was a moment of transition that called for balance and protection. People would weigh themselves on hanging scales to predict fortune and health, believing this ritual could ward off illness and misfortune.

Families often prepared seasonal dishes rich in nourishment — like rice wrapped in bamboo leaves, boiled eggs, and early summer vegetables — to build the body’s strength for the heat to come. Children wore threaded colourful cords to bring peace and safety.

🌍 A Reflection for the MBL Community

For our international community — especially for adoptees and families navigating cultures — Lìxià is more than just a seasonal marker. It is a reminder of the cycles of growth, transformation, and inner resilience.

As nature blossoms into fullness, we too are invited to embrace change, honour our origins, and prepare for the journeys ahead with clarity and compassion.

Wishing everyone a peaceful and hopeful Lìxià.
May the rising warmth bring light to your heart and strength to your path.
