Dàshǔ: May Every Child’s Growth Be Gently Protected

As the sunlight intensifies and cicadas fill the trees with their summer chorus, we welcome Dàshǔ (大暑), or Major Heat, the twelfth of China’s twenty-four solar terms.

Dàshǔ is traditionally associated with the hottest period of the year. The natural world is at its most vibrant: trees stand dense and green, lotus flowers unfold beneath the sun, and crops continue to ripen through alternating heat and rain. Summer’s vitality has reached its fullest expression.

Yet Dàshǔ is not simply a season of intense heat. It is also a season of perseverance, transformation and growth.

Growing Through Sunshine and Rain

Ancient Chinese tradition divides Dàshǔ into three natural phases: fireflies emerge from the grass; the earth becomes warm and humid; and sudden, heavy rainstorms arrive.

Together, these changes reveal the character of midsummer. Heat and rain, stillness and movement, discomfort and renewal all exist side by side. Under the fierce sun and nourishing rainfall, crops move closer to maturity and the living world continues to flourish.

Children grow in much the same way. They need sunshine: encouragement, opportunities and the freedom to explore. But they also need shade: patience, reassurance and a safe place in which they can rest.

Caring for a child does not mean shielding them from every difficulty. It means helping them develop the confidence to meet the unknown, while making sure they know that someone will be there to listen, understand and support them along the way.

Offering Shelter in the Height of Summer

On a sweltering summer day, the value of a tree becomes especially clear. It does not need to cover the entire sky; by simply extending its branches, it creates a welcome space of coolness beneath them.

Compassion can offer the same kind of shelter.

A patient response, a listening ear or an embrace free from judgement may appear to be a small gesture. Yet it can leave a lasting impression on a child’s heart. For children who have experienced separation, loss, uncertainty about their identity or challenging circumstances, being seen, understood and accepted can be profoundly important.

The Mothers’ Bridge of Love believes that every child deserves to grow up surrounded by care, dignity and respect. Regardless of where children were born, where they now live or what family and cultural experiences have shaped their lives, they should have the opportunity to express themselves freely, develop a secure sense of identity and approach the future with hope.

Through these bridges, understanding can cross geographical and cultural distances, kindness can become meaningful action, and more children can receive support when they need it most.

The Promise Beyond the Heat

After Dàshǔ, the first signs of autumn gradually draw closer.

Even the most intense heat contains the beginning of change. In the same way, the challenges encountered during childhood do not have to define the future. Difficult seasons will pass, and the strength developed within them may reveal itself slowly in the years ahead.

At Dàshǔ, may we appreciate the vitality of the natural world while also noticing those around us who may need greater understanding and care.

May every child have the freedom to flourish in the sunshine and a safe place to turn when storms arrive. May no journey of growth go unnoticed, and may every young heart find a world that feels welcoming, secure and bright.
