The 4th UK English–Chinese Bilingual Recitation Competition to be held at SOAS, London

London, October 2025

Co-hosted by the internationally registered charity The Mothers’ Bridge of Love (MBL), KYX International Education Group and Capital Class, the 4th UK English–Chinese Bilingual Recitation Competition will take place on Sunday, 30 November 2025 at the Djam Lecture Theatre, SOAS University of London.

Now in its fourth year, this celebrated bilingual event continues its mission of “building bridges through language and culture.” It encourages young people aged 5–18 to express themselves confidently in both English and Chinese through the art of recitation. Supported by educators and cultural institutions across the UK, it has become a key platform in bilingual education and youth cultural exchange.

The competition is divided into four age groups (5–7, 8–10, 11–13 and 14–18). Forty finalists have been selected after preliminary rounds. Each contestant will perform one Chinese and one English piece—poetry, prose or literary classic—showcasing linguistic talent and cross-cultural creativity.

The judging panel brings together distinguished experts from the cultural and educational communities of both China and the United Kingdom, including:

  • Frances Wood – Former Curator of Chinese Collections, The British Library; renowned sinologist and author.

  • Beth McKillop – Former Deputy Director, Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A); specialist in Chinese art and museum education.

  • Dr Yukteshwar Kumar – Course Director of the Chinese Stream, University of Bath; scholar and writer.

  • Michelle Tate – Teacher Training and Professional Development Coordinator, UCL Institute of Education.

  • Dr Seth Cook – UK-based expert on environment and sustainable development; former Head of IUCN China and Operations Director for WWF’s “China for a Global Shift Initiative”; currently with the Food and Land Use Coalition (FOLU) Asia platform.

  • Bai Xianping – President of the London Reading Club, with broad experience in publishing and    education in both China and the UK.

  • Dr Zhao Xiao – PhD in Chinese History; retired teacher and writer.

With over 21 years of international experience, The Mothers’ Bridge of Love (MBL) continues to promote education and cultural understanding between China and the UK. The competition is not only a celebration of language but also a dialogue between cultures, encouraging children to find their voice and connect hearts across borders.
