Joy Jones: “Thank You for Abandoning Me” | 乔伊·琼斯:谢谢你们的抛弃

Joy Jones: “Thank You for Abandoning Me” | 乔伊·琼斯:谢谢你们的抛弃

In the summer of 1995, in Quzhou, Zhejiang Province, a baby girl was born. Because the family already had a son, and under the realities of that time, she was abandoned near a government building when she was just over one year old.

She was later taken to a welfare institute, where she was given the name Qu Houfang.

At the age of two, she was adopted by an American couple and given a new name — Joy Jones. In her new family and environment, she showed remarkable talent and dedication to her studies, eventually earning a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from Yale University.

Many years later, Joy returned to her birthplace to search for her biological family. When she finally faced her birth parents, she said something unexpected:

“Thank you for abandoning me.”

These words were neither spoken lightly nor meant as simple forgiveness. Rather, they reflected a child once carried far away by fate, now looking back on her life with an understanding of the era and circumstances in which those choices were made.

Her story is not only about success or achievement, but about complex emotions, difficult decisions, and how a person can grow strength from life’s deepest fractures.
