MBL is building a new International Library in Yangshuo, China
MBL 2020 UNTWO Yangshuo Centre Books for Kids (B4K) Report
Principal Investigators (PI): Red and Xinran (MBL volunteers)
Location: Yulong River Scenic District, Yangshuo, Guilin, China
Time: December 2019 – January 2020
Why establish the Mothers’ Bridge of Love International Library here?
By 2020, the United Nations Survey has established eight observation stations in China: Guilin (Yangshuo), Huangshan (Huangshan Scenic Spot Observation Station and Xidihongcun Observation Station), Zhangjiajie, Kanas, Chengdu, Henan Province (Luoyang observation station, Jiaozuo Observation Station), Xishuangbanna and Changshu.
Yangshuo is not only the first tourism sustainable development observation station established by the World Tourism Organization in China, but also the first of such stations in the world. It has been 15 years since the monitoring of sustainable tourism development started in Yangshuo in 2005. The School of Tourism of Sun Yat-sen University now manages this station, located in the famous Yulong River Scenic Area (Shi Li Hua Lang, so called Ten-mile Gallery). Each year, visitors and scholars from various countries come here, often with their families, for their research and writing projects.
Currently, there is only one state library in Yangshuo County, which was established in 1945 and relocated to No. 8 Furong Road in 2007. It’s far from the Yulong River Scenic Area, where there’s no library. Local families and hotels lack Chinese and foreign language books, as well as children’s books. This limits the communication between China and foreign countries.
With its international network and resources, the Mothers’ Bridge of Love International Library can provide books in different languages to help UN TWO YSC improve international cultural communication. It can also serve as a cultural activity space for children in a scenic area and as a base for international families who have adopted Chinese children to seek their roots in China.
